Oscar - o più precisamente l’Academy Award of Merit - è rappresentato dall’inconfondibile statuetta che ritrae un cavaliere armato di spada da crociato in stile Art Deco. Ideata dallo scenografo della MGM Cedric Gib-bons, la statuetta è alta circa 34 centimetri e pesa 3,850 gr, ma non è d’oro, come comunemente si crede, ma di britannio ricoperto d’oro.
La leggenda vuole che il celebre nomignolo le sia stato affibbiato dalla bibliotecaria dell’Academy Margaret Herrick, che, vedendo la statuetta, e-sclamò: "Sembra mio zio Oscar!"

The Oscars – or, to be exact, The Academy Awards of Merit – are symbolized by the iconic statuette of a knight with a crusader’s sword, in Art Deco style. Created by the MGM set designer, Cedric Gibbons, the statuette is about 34 cm tall and weighs 3,850 g, but is not solid gold, as many believe, but gold-plated britannium.
Legend has it that its famous nickname should be attributed to Margaret Herrick, the Academy’s librarian, who, upon seeing the statuette for the first time, exclaimed, “Why, it looks just like my uncle Oscar!”
